Caring for your Jewelry
With proper care, precious jewelry should last for decades and bring you years of pleasure. Here are a few tips to safeguard your jewelry.

  • See your jeweller at least once a year and have him check your ring and other precious pieces for loose prongs and wear of mountings.
  • Protect your jewelry from scratches, sharp blows, harsh chemicals, extreme temperatures and sunlight. Jewels should be stored away from strong light, moisture, and dust. Heat and hot water can loosen settings where an adhesive has been used. Pearl rings, earrings and pendants have this type of setting be careful with them.
  • Don't wear too many chains at any one time, they will tangle and rub off one another causing damage. Chains constantly knot together but don't tug them. The best way to detangle them is to use a pin and be gentle when separating them.
  • Store jewelry separately so it doesn't scratch other jewelry. Check that storage cases are lined with non-abrasive materials such as pure cotton, velvet, or satin. Jewellery rolls are a safe way to store chains or bead necklaces. As well, you can store jewelry in the presentation boxes they came in. Diamonds scratch other jewellery, keep them wrapped up or separate them.
  • Remove rings when doing household tasks such as gardening and cleaning. They could become damaged by knocking out stones or coming into contact with abrasive materials, which discolour metal.
  • Put your jewelry on AFTER washing and applying any makeup/hair spray. Beauty products can and do affect jewellery. Settings can get clogged up with soap and hand cream. Take them off before washing hands and using cream.
  • Never wear jewelry while swimming in a swimming pool. The chlorine can cause damage to various gemstones and gold. Gemstones may become loose in their settings and possibly fall out.
  • Strong smelling foods e.g. fish & onions can tarnish gold and silver.
  • Wear jewellery as much as possible as this keeps the metals bright.
  • Avoid storing your jewelry next to a heating vent, window sill or on a car dashboard.
  • Store jewelry away from sunlight as it may fade the gemstones.
  • Be certain that stones mounted in rings are not loose or rattle. The prongs of a ring can and do wear down. If the prongs wear down too much or break, you've lost the stone. Prongs are easily "retipped" by most jewelers to keep the stone secure.
  • If you have bead necklaces such as lapis or pearls, store them flat as silk stretches over time. Most jewelers will restring necklaces or reset stones.
  • Sterling silver will polish up by rubbing or buffing it with a soft cotton cloth or a Sunshine Cloth. If you store silver in plastic bags with an interlocking seal, it will be less prone to tarnish. (Do NOT store pearls in plastic bags!)

Cleaning your Jewelry
Regularly clean your jewellery to keep it in tiptop condition, at least once a month. Brown tinting can come off on clothes and skin and is difficult to get off. When cleaning jewellery use the proper manufactured solution which can be brought from most jewellery outlets or dip them in a bowl with warm soapy water giving them a gentle stir and finishing off with an old soft toothbrush. Dry them with a soft cloth. Do not poke about under stones as this can dislodge them from settings. Hard stones (diamond, garnets, sapphires, rubies & amethysts) can be dipped and scrubbed with a toothbrush. Amber can be cleaned as long as it is dried straight away. Pearls, jade, jet, lapis, emeralds, opals & turquoise soak up liquid so they should not be dipped. Emeralds, coral & jade can be oiled treated and dipping strips the stone of oils. These stones are classed as porous.
